The Murder of Daniel Mendoza - Who Pulled the Trigger?????

The Murder of Daniel Mendoza - Who Pulled the Trigger?????

On December 28, 1996, 21-year-old Daniel Mendoza was standing outside his apartment near Flamingo and Paradise with some friends when a pickup truck pulled into the parking lot. McKellar Circle near University and Paradise was a pretty rough area at the time, and moments later, six shots were fired, and Daniel was dead.

At first, his killing seemed like another gang-related shooting in a city already overwhelmed by violence, fear, and panic, but within days, we learned something far more disturbing: the men in that truck were not rival gang members.

They were Las Vegas Metro police officers, just as the group suspected almost immediately.

Our latest episode begins a multi-part look at the murder of Daniel Mendoza, a case that is legally considered “solved,” but still raises painful questions about justice, policing, accountability, and whose lives are allowed to matter.

Part 1 takes us back to Las Vegas in the mid-1990s, a city exploding in population while violent crime, gang panic, and “tough on crime” politics shaped how certain neighborhoods were policed. It was the era of the 1994 Crime Bill, expanded policing, harsher sentencing, and the rise of mass incarceration.

Instead of focusing on all of that, we're putting the focus on Daniel.

Daniel was a son, he was engaged, he worked two jobs,.. he was working on being better. His family said he wanted to finish school, save money, help support them, and build a better life.

After his death, much of the public conversation focused on the label placed on him instead of the life taken from him. That is one of the most painful parts of this case: how easily a person’s humanity can be erased when people decide they are the “wrong” kind of victim.

In Part 1, we look at the world Daniel lived in, the officers involved, the warning signs before the shooting, and the night everything changed outside McKellar Circle.
