Swing Shift Overtime: The Disappearance of Maureen Kelly

In this Swing Shift Overtime episode, we're featuring a story that’s haunted many in the Pacific Northwest for over a decade. It comes to us from our friends at PNW Haunts & Homicides, a podcast known for blending true crime with atmospheric storytelling rooted in their home region. Today’s episode focuses on the baffling and heartbreaking disappearance of 19-year-old Maureen Leianuhea “Anu” Kelly.

In June 2013, Anu ventured into Washington’s Gifford Pinchot National Forest for what she described as a “spiritual quest.” She walked away from a remote, unmaintained campsite completely nude—save for a fanny pack containing just a knife, matches, and a compass. She told her friends she’d return by midnight. She never did.

The search that followed was extensive. Footprints were found leading toward a nearby road, and scent-tracking dogs were deployed—but her trail vanished at the pavement. Law enforcement found no evidence of foul play or substance use, but that hasn’t stopped online speculation from growing over the years. Some believe Anu succumbed to the elements. Others think she may have been abducted—or even chosen to disappear.

In August 2024, human remains were discovered in the Big Lava Bed region of the same forest, leading to renewed hope—and new questions. Could this finally bring closure to Anu’s family and friends?

This case is a stark reminder of how quickly a moment of exploration can turn into enduring uncertainty. As always, our policy when covering missing persons is to treat them as alive until we know otherwise—and to amplify their stories in the hope that someone, somewhere, knows something.
